Consett YMCA has been developing it’s Alternative Education programme continuously since it was first set up over 9 years ago.
It’s aim is to offer an alternative curriculum programme tailored to suit the needs of today’s young people, helping them to achieve and gain certification in an environment other than that of the classroom.
Starting with just one school during the first year, the programme has steadily grown bigger and currently works with 9 groups from 6 schools throughout the area, with more schools interested in starting, imminently. The Programme is also offered to groups other than schools, we currently work alongside groups such as the Youth Inclusion Programme (see below).
So far we’ve had well over 200 participants on the alternative education programme, all of whom have gained something from their time with us.
Whilst on the Programme the young people will partake in over 30 exciting yet educational activities, some of which include, kayaking, climbing, canoeing, night -lining, gorge walking, courses on manual handling and first aid, and educational visits including Beamish Museum, the Durham Light Infantry Museum and the Centre For Life, plus many, many more.
Participants on the programme have the opportunity to gain many impressive certificates throughout, including: ASDAN and Prison me no way, both GCSE equivalents, A Bronze youth achievement award and also Canoeing and kayaking 1,2 and 3 star awards as well as others.
The alternative Education programme has already benefited the lives of many young people. One such person was a young male, who’s wish in life was to join the army, unfortunately he was rejected because of his lack of academic qualifications.
However, through the Alternative education programme, he built up an impressive portfolio from the activities he participated in, which when shown to the army, allowed him to join and fulfil his ambition.
The alternative Education programme has already worked wonders for many people, now let it work for you!!!
